KANNAPOLIS — Two roads were renamed in the city of Kannapolis this month.

Kannapolis City Council approved the name changes at its regular August 8 meeting.

The first road, Orphanage Circle, leads to the Church of God Children’s Home property.

The orphanage circle was renamed Weatherby Circle. Kenneth Hudson, director of the children’s home, said he asked for the road to be renamed because of the stigma associated with the word “orphanage”.

“This will allow our residents to be more anonymous,” Hudson said.

The new name, Weatherby Circle, was chosen in honor of the Reverend GE Weatherby, former director of the children’s home. He was with the Church of God in the mid-sixties through the seventies.
