Connolly Brothers Receives Design-Build Award for Harmonic Drive Headquarters

BEVERLY, Mass. –– Connolly Brothers, Inc., a construction management company serving private commercial, industrial and institutional clients, recently won a bronze award from the New England chapter of the Design Build Institute of America ( DBIA).

At DBIA New England’s annual awards gala on Thursday, March 3, the company was praised for its work on the new $16 million headquarters of Harmonic Drive LLC, a manufacturer of gearboxes, gear and servo actuator components. Connolly Brothers provided pre-construction, design and engineering, and construction management services for the 97,000 square foot (SF) office and manufacturing plant located on a six-acre site previously undeveloped in the Dunham Ridge Business Park in Beverly, Mass.

Founded in Beverly in 1960, Harmonic Drive moved from two buildings in Peabody, Mass. at its new US headquarters. A three-story office building and light manufacturing/assembly space occupy 47,000 square feet alongside a 50,000 square foot high-rise manufacturing space. For the new headquarters, Connolly had to contend with over 50 feet of land elevation change while ensuring the space would meet all of Harmonic Drive’s industry-specific concerns, including the ability to move heavy machinery freely on the floor of the manufacturing plant.

“Connolly Brothers was the perfect fit for our project,” said Doug Olson, CEO of Harmonic Drive. “From the start, the Connolly Brothers team really listened to our needs and understood our requirements as a manufacturing company.” Olson adds that Connolly’s “experience in designing and building state-of-the-art technology facilities like ours” helped “meet our strict budget and schedule constraints and deliver a high-quality building.”

Connolly’s project team included D&D Electrical (electrical), Pitt Pipeline (site works), Hayes Engineering (civil) and JSN Associates (structural). Last year, DBIA presented Connolly with a Silver Award for his design-build work, alongside Niemitz Design Group, on the state-of-the-art Great Marsh Brewing Company in Essex, Mass.

“DBIA upholds and promotes the same principles our family business has been dedicated to for 140 years: integrity and an unwavering commitment to high-quality construction results,” said Connolly Brothers President Jay Connolly. “We are humbled and honored to be recognized by DBIA New England for the second consecutive year.”
