City of Bend opens new roundabout, at Columbia Street and Simpson Avenue
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) – Bend’s newest roundabout – its 42nd – opened on Friday at the intersection of Columbia Street and Simpson Avenue, thanks to a multi-agency partnership.
The addition of the roundabout was made possible through funding from the Bend Park and Recreation District and OSU-Cascades. The city’s engineering and infrastructure planning department oversaw the planning, design and construction management of the project.
“I want to thank everyone who got involved in this endeavor for their partnership and patience as we build this roundabout and the one at the Columbia / Colorado intersection,” said Ryan Oster, director of the engineering department. and city infrastructure planning. “These improvements will create a safer environment for all modes of travel and help meet the growing demand on our system.
“Special thanks to Bend Parks and OSU-Cascades for their partnership and to the K&E Excavating / DOWL Engineering team for getting the job done in a safe and efficient manner,” added Oster.
Formerly a four-lane stop, the new roundabout responds to increased traffic activity, assists all modes of traffic efficiently and maximizes safety, including an early reduction in emergency response time to the nearby fire station. Construction of the roundabout began in May.
