Child killed, man seriously injured in Bronx skyscraper fire – CBS New York
NEW YORK (CBSNew York) – A child has died and a man is in critical condition after a high rise fire in the Bronx.
The FDNY says firefighters were dispatched to a building on East 135th Street between Alexander and Lincoln avenues in Mott Haven around 5:15 p.m. Friday for a report of a fire in a compactor fall.

Police say smoke has spread to the upper floors of the building.
A 32-year-old man and a 6-year-old boy were found unconscious in a hallway, suffering from smoke inhalation.
The 6-year-old was pronounced dead in Harlem hospital. The 32-year-old was reportedly last reported in critical condition.
Eight people sustained non-life threatening injuries and two firefighters sustained minor injuries.

CBS2’s Cory James spoke with neighbors who said they were trapped for about an hour.
âAs soon as you opened the door, absolute black, you had to go into the apartment, it was absolute black. You couldn’t even see yourself, âsaid Darryl Thompson.
“A child who dies so young is very sad,” said Aaliyah Garcia.
A neighbor said she was grateful for a firefighter who carried her up several flights of stairs.
More than 100 firefighters responded and it took about two hours for crews to bring the blaze under control.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
