A fire with 4 alarms tears apart a building in Passaic

PASSAIC, N.J. (WABC) — A four-alarm fire ripped through an apartment building in New Jersey on Wednesday afternoon.

The flames broke out around 3:30 p.m. at 89 Main Street near Harrison Street in Passaic.

Mayor Hector Lora said the building was being evacuated and Newscopter7 video showed intense flames shooting out of a second story window.

Firefighters were on scene, working to evacuate the blaze and douse the flames.

The fire was feared to spread to two similar structures on either side, and firefighters were also trying to contain the fire in the building.

Lora said a 65-year-old man was taken to hospital, but the extent of his injuries are unknown.

It is not known what caused the fire.
