2-alarm fire damages apartment building in Overland Park, Kansas

A two-alarm fire on Friday afternoon caused extensive damage to an apartment building in Overland Park. The fire near 80th and Farley streets was reported around 4 p.m. Much of the roof of the building collapsed. Fire department spokesman Jason Rhodes said a person with reduced mobility was helped out of the building by additional crews before firefighters began to fight the blaze in defensive mode. A primary search of the building found no one inside. Authorities said they considered all residents of the building. “I didn’t know what was going on. They were knocking on the door. When I got out, I was shaking. Everything can be replaced,” said resident Marsha McMeans. No injuries were reported. The fire department said 13 people from seven occupied units were displaced. The Red Cross is helping 11 people to find accommodation. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
